Laws of Cricket Question 3

The bowler bowls a legal ball to a batsman. The ball isn't going to hit the stumps and the batsman goes to pad the ball away. The ball hits his pad, drops to the ground and comes to rest. The batsman then hits the ball with his bat to the offside and runs a single. One of the fielders shouts 'howzat'.

havent they changed this rule recently?
Simon

The only rule they have changed recently is that if you give a controversial decision against any of the Asian block countries you get the sack Laughing
Simon

The answer is give the batsman out 'hit the ball twice' so congratulations to the one person that voted for that answer.

You could discount two of the six possible answers very quickly. The scenario stated that the bowler bowled a legal ball that the ball was not going to hit the stumps so that immediately rules out calling a no ball and giving the batsman out LBW. None of you fell for those red herrings.

When the batsman pads the ball away that is counted as his 'first hit' so if any runs came from it they would be leg byes not runs. However, as he padded it away you would normally deem the batsman not to have played a shot (or taken evasive action) and call dead ball and disallow any runs scored.
However, in this case, the batsman hit the ball again. Now if he did this to protect his wicket he would not be out.
The scenario clearly stated that the ball came to rest so could he could not have been protecting his wicket when he hit it the second time.
Now of course if no-one had appealed then the Umpire would not give him out as virtually all dismissals have to be by appeal by the fielding side. In this case the scenario stated that someone shouted 'howzat' which is an appeal for any type of dismissal. Therefore, as Umpire, you would give the batsman out.

Also, congratulations to the person that voted for 'give the batsman out hit the ball twice' after I had posted the answer!

Woo hoo! I put give him out 'hit ball twice' and it was way before you posted the answer. Although I wasn't sure I was correct!!
