Notchers 1:

ds111

Simon

143
Martin H

i got 143! as first day ruled out match becomes a 2 day match for the follow on rule and thus its within 100 runs

Notchers 2:

The striker plays the ball a second time in defence of his wicket. A fielder throws the ball at the wicket; the ball misses and goes on to cross the boundary. How many runs should be added to the total?
bailbreaker

o runs, but i would assume an appeal of "owzat!"
Martin H

to which the umpire would reply 'NOT OUT'
Simon

Assuming that the batsman hasn't left his crease then 4 runs
Martin H

wooo yes simon

notchers 3:

A fielder notifies the umpires that he is leaving the field at 2.51pm. He returns at 3.06pm; at how many minutes after 3 o'clock will he be allowed to bowl?
Simon

21?
Martin H

simon your obviously ready for the next questions! the next three are all related so here goes

notchers 4:
The bowlers end umpire calls and signals wide ball and the ball goes on to cross the boundary. at the same time the stiker's end umpire calls and signals no ball because there are three fielders behind the line of the popping crease on the on side. How many wide balls should be recorded by the scorer?

notchers 5:
......and how many runs should be added to the total?

notchers 6:
..... and how many seperate signals should the scorer acknowledge?
Holty

no wides

5 runs added, no ball plus 4

2 signals, no ball and 4

am i any good at this?
Martin H

yes and yes and 'what about the wide signal!'
DavidU

OK, by my counting, 3 signals made, 2 of which are to be acknowleged. Exactly how, without the use radios or mobile phones is anyone supposed to know which signals are being recognised, or do we get into an element of trust in the scorers ability ?
Martin H

This Quiz assumes you have scorers who are just scorers not! players doing it for 10 overs etcc.....
And ALL signals should be acknowledged by the scorer and The umpire should only stop doing them when they have been acknowledged to his satisfaction!!!!!
Simon

I mostly agree with Steve.

4. No wides

5. five runs (all no balls)

6. If we are talking about proper umpires. The scorer should not acknowledge the wide or no ball signals that the umpires make while the ball is in play. Once the ball is dead (i.e. gone over the boundary) the strikers end umpire should again signal no ball which should be acknowledged and then the bowlers end umpire should signal four which the scorer would acknowledge. Therefore answer is two.
Martin H

all probably true simon, the thing i'm not sure of is whether the bowlers end umpire has to cancel the wide call! also re-reading the question i'm not sure when the no ball is called! one way of reading it is the no ball is called as the ball crosses the boundary! and in all likely the events would be wide signalled and acknowledged then 4 signalled and acknowledged and then no ball acknowledged and then the wide is cancelled! another signal and acknowledgement possibly!!! depends on the sequence of events and time between them
i think your version is how the questioner meant it to be......

Notchers 8:A forty minute lunch interval is scheduled to start at 1.15pm. an innings finishes at 1.07pm at how many mintues after 1 o'clock should play resume?
bailbreaker

1-57PM
Martin H

not the answer i've got!!!!
Simon

47 minutes?
Martin H

simon 'tom' smith does it again!!!

notchers 9: The striker plays no shot at a ball which runs of his pads in the direction of fine leg, and the batsman run. in a attempt to run out the batsman a fielder throws the ball at the wicket, but the ball misses and goes on to cross the boundary. How many runs should be added to the total?
Rushy

none, the umpire will call a dead ball.
Martin H

none i agree with, but when will he call dead ball?
Martin H

The last few questions for the weekend!

notchers 10: The striker hits the ball high in the air; the batsmen run and have crossed on their secomd run before the non-striker calls out 'DROP IT'. The fielder fails to take the catch and , on appeal, the batsman is given out Obstructing the field, How many runs should be added to the total?

Notchhers 11......and which batsman is out (striker = 1, non-striker = 2)

extras The boundary is marked by a rope - the ball, hit high in the air lands full-toss on top of the rope. How many runs should be added to the total?
Rushy

10. no runs
11. striker
12. 6 runs
Martin H

whoo rushy we'll make an umpire of you yet
Simon

I have come accross the official answers to the Scratchers vs Notchers quiz. We got all the questions correct bar two.

Martin - In your exitement you forgot to ask question 7 of the Notchers innings!

There was a lot of debate over Notchers question 6.
The question was 'The bowlers end umpire calls and signals wide ball and the ball goes on to cross the boundary. At the same time the stiker's end umpire calls and signals no ball because there are three fielders behind the line of the popping crease on the on side. How many separate signals should the scorer acknowledge?'

As I said at the time the original signals should not be acknowledged by the scorers. I think nearly everyone got that once the ball was dead the standing umpire would signal no ball and then four which would both be acknowleged by the scorers.

So what is the third signal? Well we all missed it but once you know the answer it is obvious.
The bowlers end umpire initially signalled a wide therefore the batsman could not have hit the ball. So once the ball was dead the umpire would have signalled 'bye' in between the no ball and four signals. All three would have been acknowledged by the scorer.
